My Story as a Pleasanton Beekeeper
In late 2014 my wife and I were taking walks around Pleasanton and noticed that on many of the
flowers we didn't see honey bees. Around this same time my friend gave me an old bee hive box(no
bees) and told me about how nice it is to see a stream of bees flying out of your backyard and into the
sky to find nectar. Because of that visual and due to the lack of bees in Pleasanton I decided to
become a backyard hobby beekeeper. I searched the Pleasanton municipal codes for: beekeeping,
apiary, honey bee, and hive and did not find any results (See figure A below). So I mistakenly
assumed that beekeeping was OK in Pleasanton.
4- C gcode.us/codes/pleasanton/
No topics were found matching your search terms.please try Pleasanton Municipal Code
aaah.
Search Print No
Search terms:
Beekeeping apary honey bee hive
title 1 GENERAL PROVISIONS
Title 2 ADMINISTRATION AND PERSONNEL
Title 3 REVENUE AND FINANCE
Title 4(RESERVED)
Title 5 BUSINESS LICENSING AND TAXATION
title 6 SPECIFIC BUSINESS REGULATIONS
Title 7 ANIMALS
Title B(RESERVED)
Title 9 HEALTH AND SAFETY
Title 10 PUBLIC PEACE,MORALS AND WELFARE
Title 11 VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC
Title 12(RESERVED)
Title 13 STREETS,SIDEWALKS AND PUBLIC PLACES
Title 14 WATER
Title 15 SEWERAGE
Title 16(RESERVED)
Title 17 PLANNING AND RELATED MATTERS
Title 18 ZONING
idle 19 SUBDIVISIONS
Title 20 BUILDINGS AND CONSTRUCTION
Figure A
Over the next few months I purchased and captured bee swarms and set up 4 honey bee colonies in
my back yard. See figure B below. My apiary contained 4 honey bee colonies and a water source.
The honey bees are very self-sufficient and only require a water source and flowers for nectar and
pollen. I had these bees without issue from March 1st to July 10th 2014.
61Page
