Honey Bees
Apis Mellifera is the most common domesticated species of bees. The Apis Mellifera is
a European or Italian bee, which is more commonly known as the honey bee (see
Image 1 below). During the summer, approximately 60,000 or more honey bees can
reside in a hive. Within the hive, the colony is made up of three different types of bees:
worker, drone, and queen.
Ima•e 1: Hone Bees
..,.
.r«_ M'w•••iw-:lr.. ---:..--stir-'
...:01.04:4470..t., 04...10.1:.4.100.1
• -. • 4.
. :,,t4, 7.-:-:••■•+ 02`Zlig..7=•1114Att%.7:,
4i • ,te4 ; ` 041+4Ae
. ; • . ry •A= =q+, 4s was 0 .
O A Ob0 A p ••mod• ati7.
• n ✓ .. f►Aow•Aa.-Mw,e
• • t•, K4
,-ar a ' AP's 'a tr•K'ti0 G` p -- d
' " of p - ••:••• •..4?, °•kvb,
, , ' ' --• :riA3t. 4 ,. * 410 e--v - Hit,Abtr.
sou
..N.,%...15-.-
fik •i 44*-F - • - .. -:'.. :—_ -- ^ 'Y -. - h," •. }_
The worker bees make up the majority of the hive's population and are all female.
These bees are the smallest of the three bee types and are the bees that are most
commonly seen as they are the bees foraging for food for the hive. The worker bees do
not typically travel beyond a two- to three-mile radius from the hive and only live 45
days.
The drone bees make up a relatively small percentage of the hive's total population,
typically numbering a few hundred during peak season, and are the only male bee.
Drone bees rarely leave the hive as their only purpose is to mate with a queen bee, 200
to 300 feet in the air. Drone bees do not forage for food, do not help build the combs
within the hive, do not have a stinger, and do not live longer than six months.
P14-1276, Beekeeping Planning Commission
