DISCUSSION
The Draft Master Plan Report presents both a comprehensive review of the history and
existing conditions at the Cemetery and a vision and plan for its future. The Cemetery's
vision as outlined in the Master Plan builds on the Committee's adopted vision of:
"At the Pleasanton Pioneer Cemetery we seek to preserve its history and create a self-
sustaining, park-like setting where creative alternatives for human burial can take place
in our community."
As a way of assuring a comprehensive approach to potential future development, the
Master Plan includes a detailed site plan design concept, a business plan, a
construction cost estimate, new maintenance standards and recommended operational
standards and the potential for continued/public and private partnership related to the
Cemetery's short and longer term operations. A summary of some of its key elements is
as follows:
Site Plan Design Concept (Included as Attachment 3)
. Convert the Cemetery's roads to one-way and add a new loop road providing
enhanced vehicle circulation to the South Hill — Dry Creek Garden area located at
the southern portion of the Cemetery.
. Add sixteen new parking spaces with 5 spaces along the new loop road; 5 spaces
along the historic road; 1 space near the entry to the Sunol Cremation Garden, and
5 spaces at the end of the lower road on the east side of the property.
. Develop new pedestrian paths through the historic section of the cemetery and the
expanded South Hill — Dry Creek Garden and add three new gathering areas,
including a Veteran's Memorial plaza.
• Improve interior signage.
• Improve the existing grass areas in the majority of the cemetery and provide a more
attractive, sustainable ground cover utilizing drought tolerant plant materials and an
improved water efficient irrigation system.
• Expand the availability of burial options as noted below:
Summary of Proposed New Burial Plots
Location New Cremains Plots New Casket Plots Total
Sunol Cremation Garden 2,808 - 2,808
South Hill—Dry Creek Garden 3,677 - 3,677
Historic Infill Blocks 624 - 624
Historic Area - 375 375
Undeveloped Areas - 250 250
Totals 7,109 625 7,734
*The proposed new plots are in addition to the remaining 153 casket plots and 128 cremation plots.
The proposed new plots would be designed to include a range of burial options
including premier sites with estate type detailing, single and/or companion grave plots
offered at affordable prices to families, and cremation burial options in both the existing
infill areas and the proposed Sunol Cremation Garden and the South Hill-Dry Creek
Garden.
