THE CITY OF <br /> PLEASANTONo CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT <br /> October 21, 2014 <br /> Community Services <br /> TITLE: APPROVE TWO (2) PROPOSED DESIGNS FOR "PROJECT PAINT BOX" <br /> SUMMARY <br /> "Project Paint Box" is a utility box beautification program that celebrates local artwork <br /> and encourages regional artists to share their creativity throughout the City of <br /> Pleasanton. Vibrant artwork helps deter unsightly graffiti and creates pleasant spaces <br /> for residents and visitors. At its workshop on May 5, 2014, the Civic Arts Commission <br /> discussed this project and in July, a "Call for Artists" was placed locally, regionally and <br /> nationally in artists' forums, job arenas and in the local press. Additionally, several local <br /> artists were personally notified. <br /> A total of ten (10) designs were received. Six (6) designs were reviewed by the Public <br /> Art Selection Sub-Committee (PASS) on September 10, 2014. Four (4) of the <br /> applications and designs that were received were not complete and therefore were <br /> disqualified. At its September 23, 2014 meeting, the Civic Arts Commission reviewed <br /> the four (4) designs and recommended two (2) designs for placement on utility boxes. <br /> CIVIC ARTS COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION <br /> That the City Council approve the two (2) proposed designs: "Children at Play"by artist, <br /> Irma Grant, to be placed on the utility box located at the corner of First and Neal <br /> Streets.; and "P-Town — 'Me' Town" by artist, Chinar Desai, to be placed on the utility <br /> box located on Main Street in front of the Oasis Grille. <br /> RECOMMENDATION <br /> That the City Council approve the two (2) proposed designs: "Children at Play"by artist, <br /> Irma Grant, to be placed on the utility box located at the corner of First and Neal <br /> Streets.; and "P-Town — 'Me' Town" by artist, Chinar Desai, to be placed on the utility <br /> box located on Main Street in front of the Oasis Grille. <br /> FINANCIAL STATEMENT <br /> All artists chosen for this project will be compensated $500 per utility box. Artist <br /> compensation will be funded through the Public Art Acquisition Fund # 038-900. <br />
