9. Where an above-ground pool structure is used as a barrier or where the barrier <br /> is mounted on top of the pool structure, and the means of access is a ladder or <br /> steps: <br /> 9.1. T <br /> he ladder or steps shall be capable of being secured, locked or removed to <br /> prevent access; or <br /> 9.2. T <br /> he ladder or steps shall be surrounded by a barrier which meets the <br /> requirements of Section AG105.2, Items 1 through 8. When the ladder or <br /> steps are secured, locked or removed, any opening created shall not allow <br /> the passage of a 4-inch-diameter (102 mm) sphere. <br /> Prior to the issuance of any final approval for the completion of permitted construction or <br /> remodeling work, the Building and Safety Official shall inspect and verify the drowning <br /> safety prevention devices required have been installed and functional properly. <br /> AG105.3 Indoor swimming pool. Walls surrounding an indoor swimming pool shall <br /> comply with Section AG105.2, Item 8. <br /> AG105.4 Prohibited locations. Barriers shall be located to prohibit permanent <br /> structures, equipment or similar objects from being used to climb them. <br /> AG105.5 Barriers. <br /> AG105.5.1 Enclosure; required characteristics. An enclosure shall have all of the <br /> following characteristics: <br /> 1. Any access gates through the enclosure open away from the swimming pool and <br /> are self-closing with a self-latching device placed no lower than 60 inches (1524 <br /> mm) above the ground. <br /> 2. A minimum height of 60 inches (1524 mm). <br /> 3. A maximum vertical clearance from the ground to the bottom of the enclosure of <br /> 2 inches (51 mm). <br /> 4. Gaps or voids, if any, do not allow passage of a sphere equal to or greater than 4 <br /> inches (102 mm) in diameter. <br /> 5. An outside surface free of protrusions, cavities or other physical characteristics <br /> that would serve as handholds or footholds that could enable a child below the <br /> age of five years to climb over. <br /> AG105.5.2 Barrier exceptions. Spas or hot tubs with locking safety covers that comply <br /> with the American Society for Testing Materials Emergency Performance Specification <br /> (ASTM ES 13-89) or ASTM F 1346, as listed in Section AG107, shall be exempt from <br /> the provisions of this appendix. <br /> AG105.6 Barrier prerequisite to filling of pool. An inspection to verify pool barriers <br /> are installed, functional and in compliance with the approved plans shall occur and be <br /> approved by the Building and Safety Official before water may be introduced into any <br /> pool or spa. <br />
