She said there has been some discussion among botanists about the <br /> environmental damage non native species can inflict and wondered whether those impacts are taken <br /> into consideration when determining what to do with certain trees. <br /> Landscape Architect Mike Fulford explained that the focus is always on preserving as many large <br /> healthy trees as possible, regardless of species or native status. He acknowledged that eucalyptus <br /> trees in particular can become a problem when planted in mass, but said that one larger tree like this <br /> planted in the middle of the park should not be a concern. He assured the Council that every effort will <br /> be made to save as many of the parks' trees as possible. He also noted that the trees represented <br /> along the First Street planting strip are existing trees that will be preserved. <br /> Vice-Mayor Cook-Kallio asked what criteria staff uses when determining what types of tree to plant in a <br /> particular environment. <br /> Mr. Fulford said they consider the desired function of the tree as well as the maintenance required by <br /> that particular species. <br /> MOTION: It was m/s by Narum/Brown to direct staff to pursue preliminary Optior A. Motion carried by <br /> the following vote: <br /> Ayes: Councilmembers Brown, Cook-Kallio, Narum, Pentin, Mayor Thorne <br /> Noes: None <br /> Absent: None <br /> MATTERS INITIATED BY COUNCIL <br /> Mayor Thorne requested and received Council support for putting together some sort of Council team <br /> for the Fireman's Muster on August 17, 2013. <br /> COUNCIL REPORTS <br /> Mayor Thorne said he would update staff on the latest League of California Cities Board meeting as <br /> well as provide copies of the agenda and minutes to any interested members of the Council. <br /> Councilmember Narum said she attended the recent Economic Vitality Committee workshop where <br /> they had a great discussion on identifying selling points for locating a business; in Pleasanton. The <br /> Committee will hold a formal meeting on Thursday. <br /> Mayor Thorne asked and staff confirmed that members of the Planning Commission are invited to <br /> attend the League's Planning Commission training program. <br /> Mr. Fialho stated that Commissioners are offered one conference per year, which is typically this <br /> training program or the local government commission. <br /> ADJOURNMENT <br /> There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m. The Council extended a <br /> tribute to our nation's men and women serving in the military.
