CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PLEASANTON <br /> <br /> ALAMEDA COUNTY, ALAMEDA <br /> <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 03-092 <br /> <br />RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE AMERICAN LIBRARY <br />ASSOCIATION AND THE CALIFORNIA LIBRARY ASSOCIATION <br />RESOLUTIONS IN SUPPORT OF THE FREEDOM TO READ <br />PROTECTION ACT AND THE LIBRARY AND BOOKSELLER ACT <br />EXEMPTING LIBRARIES AND BOOKSTORES FROM SECTION 215 <br />OF THE PATRIOT ACT <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />the City of Pleasanton affirms its strong opposition to terrorism, but also affirms <br />that any efforts to end terrorism should not be waged at the expense of the <br />fundamental civil rights and liberties of the people of Pleasanton and of the United <br />States; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />the Pleasanton City Council calls on all private citizens and organizations, <br />including residents, employers, educators and business owners, to demonstrate <br />similar respect for civil rights and liberties; and <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PLEASANTON RESOLVES <br />AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />Section 1: <br /> <br />The City of Pleasanton calls on its United States Senators and House <br />Representatives to support the Freedom to Read Protection Act (HR 115, Sanders) <br />and the Library and Bookseller Act (S 1158, Boxer), both of which exempt <br />libraries and bookstores from Section 215 of the Patriot Act. <br /> <br />Section 2: <br /> <br />The City of Pleasanton supports the resolutions of the American Library <br />Association and the California Library Association concerning the Patriot Act. <br /> <br />Section 3: <br /> <br />The City Council directs staff to send copies of this resolution to the President of <br />the United States, to our elected Federal representatives and to the Governor of <br />California. <br /> <br /> <br />
