Councilmember Brown read the proclamation declaring May "Older Americans Month" into the record. Marsha Becker, President of the Pleasanton VIP Senior Club, thanked the Co•ancil on behalf of all Pleasanton seniors. She described some of the club's better known activities, which include operating the Peddler Shoppe, a travel bureau and woodworkers' group. She also provided the Council and public with a full calendar of activities. 13. Presentation of a proclamation proclaiming May 10-19 "Affordable Housing Week" Abigail Goldware, Project Manager with MidPen Housing Corporation and representative of East Bay Housing Organization, said Affordable Housing Week is an opportunity to bring attention to all the wonderful examples of affordable housing throughout the East Bay. The week is comprised of over 20 events held throughout 6 different East Bay cities, including a kickoff event to be held next Friday in Oakland. On behalf of MidPen and EBHO, she commended the City for its ongoing conversations about how to best meet the needs of the community and its residents. She said she looks forward to continuing to work with the Kottinger Place Redevelopment Task Force. She left a calendar of events for the public. Presentation of a proclamation proclaiming May as "Bicycle Safety & Bike to Work or School Month" and May 9th as "Bike to Work Day" Economic Development Specialist Lisa Adamos summarized upcoming activities related to Bicycle Safety & Bike to Work or School Month and left several copies of the Bicycle Safety Brochure for the Council and public. She invited anyone seeking more information to visit www.pleasantongreenscene.orq\transportation and noted that the East Bay Bicycle Coalition is hosting three bicycle safety classes this summer. She also thanked Valley Spokesmen Bicycle Club for their generous donation of funds which purchased helmets to be passed out to middle school students. 15. Public Comment Mayor Thorne noted that the Consent Calendar included appointment of a new Poet Laureate, Sandra Harrison-Kay. Ms. Harrison-Kay introduced herself as an 18 year resident of Pleasanton and direct beneficiary of its wonderful literary arts programs. She said this seems like a fitting way to contribute back to the City and thanked the Council for the opportunity. She read an original piece of work titled A Census of a Different Kind. John Loll, Civic Arts Commission and parent/volunteer for Boy Scouts Troop 948, noted two Scouts were present to work on their Citizenship in the Community merit badge. He noted that the intersection of Peters and West Angela Street is a busy walking thoroughfare and suggested that it would be immensely safer if a crosswalk were painted across Peters Avenue. Elias Pratt, Troop 948, said he particularly enjoys the plays and theatrical performances at the Firehouse Arts Center and thanked the City for providing such a wonderful amenity. Oliver Loll, Troop 948, said he appreciated the extent to which Pleasanton embraces various clubs and groups.
