Councilmember Brown read the proclamation declaring May "Older Americans Month" into the record. <br /> Marsha Becker, President of the Pleasanton VIP Senior Club, thanked the Council on behalf of all <br /> Pleasanton seniors. She described some of the club's better known activities, which include operating <br /> the Peddler Shoppe, a travel bureau and woodworkers' group. She also provided the Council and <br /> public with a full calendar of activities. <br /> 13. Presentation of a proclamation proclaiming May 10-19 "Affordable Housing Week" <br /> Abigail Goldware, Project Manager with MidPen Housing Corporation and representative of East Bay <br /> Housing Organization, said Affordable Housing Week is an opportunity to bring attention to all the <br /> wonderful examples of affordable housing throughout the East Bay. The week is comprised of over 20 <br /> events held throughout 6 different East Bay cities, including a kickoff event to be held next Friday in <br /> Oakland. On behalf of MidPen and EBHO, she commended the City for its ongoing conversations <br /> about how to best meet the needs of the community and its residents. She said she looks forward to <br /> continuing to work with the Kottinger Place Redevelopment Task Force. Presentation of a proclamation proclaiming May as "Bicycle Safety & Bike to Work or School <br /> Month" and May 9th as "Bike to Work Day" <br /> Economic Development Specialist Lisa Adamos summarized upcoming activities related to Bicycle <br /> Safety & Bike to Work or School Month and left several copies of the Bicycle Seifety Brochure for the <br /> Council and public. She invited anyone seeking more information to visit <br /> www.pleasantongreenscene.orq\transportation and noted that the East Bay Bicycle Coalition is hosting <br /> three bicycle safety classes this summer. She also thanked Valley Spokesmen Bicycle Club for their <br /> generous donation of funds which purchased helmets to be passed out to middle school students. <br /> 15. Public Comment <br /> Mayor Thorne noted that the Consent Calendar included appointment of a new Poet Laureate, Sandra <br /> Harrison-Kay. <br /> Ms. Harrison-Kay introduced herself as an 18 year resident of Pleasanton and d rect beneficiary of its <br /> wonderful literary arts programs. She said this seems like a fitting way to contribute back to the City and <br /> thanked the Council for the opportunity. She read an original piece of work titled A Census of a <br /> Different Kind. <br /> John Loll, Civic Arts Commission and parent/volunteer for Boy Scouts Troop 948, noted two Scouts <br /> were present to work on their Citizenship in the Community merit badge. He noted that the intersection <br /> of Peters and West Angela Street is a busy walking thoroughfare and suggested that it would be <br /> immensely safer if a crosswalk were painted across Peters Avenue. <br /> Elias Pratt, Troop 948, said he particularly enjoys the plays and theatrical performances at the <br /> Firehouse Arts Center and thanked the City for providing such a wonderful amenity. <br /> Oliver Loll, Troop 948, said he appreciated the extent to which Pleasanton embraces various clubs and <br /> groups.
