Attachment 1 BACKGROUND City Resolution 08-234, which originally established the Committee, provides that the City Council may extend the term of the Committee beyond its initial two years (including any extensions) based on an assessment of needs and responsibilities. Due to the myriad tasks involved in implementing the Climate Action Plan and other pressing energy and environmental programs, and the desire to help educate and solicit input from the community, it is recommended that the Committee be extended through April 30, 2015. DISCUSSION At its meeting of March 27, 2013 the Committee clarified and identified its objectives moving forward: 1. Provide oversight and review of Climate Action Plan implementation; 2. Conduct outreach activities to communicate the benefits of natural resource conservation and environmental stewardship; 3. Provide insights on related current events, literature, and technology developments; and 4. Develop, review, and make recommendations on proposed city ordinances and policies. The Committee additionally recommends that its regular meeting schedule be revised to meet bi-monthly (every other month) as this most effectively meets its work load and member schedule. To date, the Committee has focused on development of the Climate Action Plan, ordinances regarding single use plastic bags and foam containers, rezoning to allow for vertical access wind turbines, commercial and residential energy programs, energy and water conservation efforts, public outreach and education, natural resource management and fleet replacement programs. The Committee remains open and committed to assisting the City in meeting State legislative requirements, while supporting the City's General Plan, Climate Action Plan, and Council priorities.
