THE CITY OF A O
--- CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT I
pL£ASANTONo
March 19, 2013
Community Development
Planning Division
TITLE: AUTHORIZE MAYOR TO SIGN LETTER IN SUPPORT OF CALIFORNIA
ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY ACT (CEQA) REFORM
SUMMARY
The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) was originally enacted in 1970. In the
40 years since then many additional environmental regulations and standards have
been enacted, yet public and private projects are commonly challenged under CEQA
even when a project meets all other environmental standards in existing law. Several
bills have recently been introduced in the California legislature which would reform or
otherwise change the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). The attached
letter, addressed to Governor Brown and our state representatives, supports reform of
CEQA to preserve the law's original intent while preventing special interest CEQA
abuses that jeopardize in-fill development, job-creation and the environment.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council authorize the Mayor to sign the attached letter
in support of CEQA reform.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
Action on this item would have no financial impact on the City.
