Commissioner Lambert suggested that $10,000 be considered for such a project with the Needs
Assessment for needs that are currently not being met. He felt there could be collaboration
between Axis and the Pleasanton Unified School District for a project dealing with Teen Drug
and Alcohol.
Ms. Compton provided information about such a program being offered by Axis that has
received $180,000 from Alameda County for an 18-month period, and will allow Axis to meet
some of the needs within Pleasanton schools. She felt there was an incredible need at
Pleasanton schools and any additional funding would help Axis provide services, weekly classes
for students, scholarship program needs, and counselor costs.
Commissioner Jhanwar questioned whether services provided would be for support or
prevention.
Commissioner Wright thought other programs should also be considered for any funds the
Commission requested to be set aside. She indicated that she would like to see consideration
for a program for providing dental care services.
Commissioner Nagler felt the Commission should not take these funds from the grant funds
already made available, but should approach the City Council to see if there is interest in
allocating additional funds from another source for a special project. Commissioners agreed
that this was a topic they would like to discuss further at the next meeting and asked that it be
added to the meeting agenda.
Commissioner Berger commented on the funding request from Abode Services. She felt that
this agency was having difficulty finding qualified applicants for the program and that the cost
per client was high. Commissioner Berger suggested the Commission consider not funding this
agency. Commissioner Roby felt that, if the agency is not funded, the Housing Commission
should be provided background regarding the Human Services Commission's recommendation.
After reviewing the funding recommendations in Alternatives A and B, the Commission reached
an agreement and the following motion was made.
A motion was made by Commissioner Berger, seconded by Commissioner Roby,
recommending the City Council approve the following funding recommendations for Housing
and Human Services Grant (HHSG) Funds for Fiscal Year 2012/13:
CDBG Gen.Fund
$ 12,000 —Abode Services —Tri-Valley Housing Scholarship
$ 11,035 $ 4,000 —Axis Community Health —Access to Care for Uninsured Low-Inc.
$ 11,000 — East Bay Innovations —Ticket to Work Employment Network
$ 10,000 — Easter Seals Bay Area — Easter Seals Bay Area Community
Inclusion Group
$ 15,000 — Eden I&R—2-1-1 Alameda County
$ 10,000 — Legal Assistance for Seniors — Free Legal Services for Low-Income
$ 10,000 — Open Heart Kitchen — Pleasanton Meal Program Trinity
$ 25,000 — Open Heart Kitchen — Pleasanton Senior Meal Program
Human Services Commission Minutes
March 7, 2012
Page 6
