THE CITY OF 7
CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
pLEASANTON®
April 17, 2012
Community Development
Traffic Engineering Division
TITLE: APPROVE AMENDMENT NUMBER 3 TO THE AGREEMENT FOR
MAINTENANCE OF STATE HIGHWAYS IN THE CITY OF PLEASANTON
SUMMARY
The City operates and maintains most Caltrans owned traffic signals at freeway
interchanges on 1-580 and 1-680 via an existing maintenance agreement. The two traffic
signals constructed at the I-680/Bernal interchange are the only two not included in this
agreement.
Caltrans staff has recently agreed to include these traffic signals in the existing
maintenance agreement. By assuming operation and maintenance responsibilities, City
staff will be able to implement and control traffic signal timing along the Bernal corridor
to improve intersection and corridor operations. City staff will also be able to implement
"special event" corridor signal timing designed to improve traffic operations during
Alameda County Fairgrounds special events (i.e., Alameda County Fair, Goodguys
events, etc.) and respond quickly during emergencies that may impact corridor
operations and safety.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council approve amendment number 3 to the
agreement for the maintenance of state highways in the City of Pleasanton.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
Initial capital expenditures to update existing field equipment will cost approximately
$2,000 and will be funded through annual traffic signal replacement funds. Operations
and maintenance costs will be shared with Caltrans, resulting in a net recurring monthly
cost increase of less than $200.
