THE CITY OF
— % - Y, O('
DVS
.1L—
jL£ASANTONo CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
November 15, 2011
Police
TITLE: APPROVE THE TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP OF POLICE CANINE
"ROBBY" TO OFFICER RANDY PAULSON
SUMMARY
The City's authorized veterinarian has determined that Police Service Canine Robby, an
11 year old German Sheppard, is no longer capable of carrying out his assignments due
to hearing loss. As a result, it is necessary that he retire from service with the
Pleasanton Police Department. Consistent with previous canine retirements, staff is
recommending that the ownership of the canine be transferred for a fee of $1 to the
police officer that has trained and handled the dog during its tenure with the City. In
addition, staff is recommending a payment of up to $600 annually for the remainder of
this year and the next three calendar years, to cover the cost of any medical treatment
provided by the City's authorized veterinarian. These actions assure that the animal is
properly cared for and handled after its service with the City has ended.
RECOMMENDATION
• Approve the attached Agreement and Bill of Sale formalizing the transfer of
ownership of Police Service Canine Robby to Officer Randy Paulson for a fee of $1.
• Approve up to $600 annually for the remainder of this year and the next three
calendar years, to cover medical treatment for Robby as performed by the City's
authorized veterinarian.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
Total cumulative maximum cost through December 2014 is $2,400. There is adequate
funding in the Police Department's operating budget (123202) to cover the cost of the
recommended expenditures. Typically, the life expectancy of police service canines
after retirement is two to three years.
