THE CITY OF 05 <br /> CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT <br /> pL E ASANTONo <br /> November 1, 2011 <br /> Community Services <br /> TITLE: APPROVE THE LOCATION OF THE PUBLIC ARTWORK, "SPECIAL <br /> FRIENDS" IN CIVIC PARK <br /> SUMMARY <br /> "Special Friends" is a full-size, representational bronze sculpture that has been donated <br /> to the City's public art collection by Nancy and Gary Harrington. The suggested location <br /> for the sculpture is in Civic Park, at the far south end of Main Street. As part of the <br /> process for the City's Public Art Program, if the proposed location lies within a City park <br /> and/or recreational facility, the location must be reviewed and approved by the Parks <br /> and Recreation Commission. Upon its approval and that of the Civic Arts Commission, <br /> the item is then forwarded to the City Council for its review and consideration. At its <br /> regular meeting on September 8, 2011, the Parks and Recreation Commission <br /> approved the proposed location for "Special Friends" in Civic Park. Members of the <br /> Commission generally felt that the location was "appropriate and very good," and one <br /> Commissioner remarked that the proposed location was "genius." At its regular meeting <br /> on October 3, 2011, the Civic Arts Commission also approved the proposed location in <br /> Civic Park. <br /> CIVIC ARTS COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION <br /> That the City Council approve the location of the public artwork, "Special Friends" in <br /> Civic Park. <br /> PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION <br /> That the City Council approve the location of the public artwork, "Special Friends" in <br /> Civic Park. <br /> RECOMMENDATION <br /> That the City Council approve the location of the public artwork, "Special Friends" in <br /> Civic Park. <br /> FINANCIAL STATEMENT <br /> The artwork "Special Friends," which is valued at $16,000, has been donated to the City <br /> by Nancy and Gary Harrington. Pursuant to the terms of the Harrington Art Partnership, <br /> it is the City's responsibility to coordinate and pay for the installation of the public <br /> artwork. The cost of installing the piece is estimated at $2,500 and will be funded <br /> through the Public Art Acquisition Fund #038-900-4385. <br /> Page 1 of 2 <br />
