THE CITY OF 0}V( <br /> ^ <br /> CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT <br /> pLEASANTON® <br /> October 4, 2011 <br /> Community Services <br /> TITLE: APPROVE APPOINTMENT OF CYNTHIA BRYANT AS CITY POET <br /> LAUREATE FOR 2011 — 2013 <br /> SUMMARY <br /> The primary role of the Poet Laureate is to provide appropriate poetry at civic events, <br /> and promote the appreciation of the literary arts in the community for a two-year period. <br /> With the current Poet Laureate's term coming to an end, the City established a Poet <br /> Laureate Selection Committee to review submitted materials, interview candidates, and <br /> make a recommendation of a new Poet Laureate for the next two-year term. When no <br /> qualified candidates came forward, City staff was informed that a past Poet Laureate, <br /> Cynthia Bryant, was interested in resuming her responsibilities. <br /> CIVIC ARTS COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION <br /> It is recommended that the City Council approve the appointment of Cynthia Bryant as <br /> City Poet Laureate for 2011 -- 2013. <br /> RECOMMENDATION <br /> It is recommended that the City Council approve the appointment of Cynthia Bryant as <br /> City Poet Laureate for 2011 -- 2013. <br /> FINANCIAL STATEMENT <br /> The City Poet Laureate receives no remuneration. Any expenses related to the Poet <br /> Laureate program, i.e. supplies for workshops, poetry readings, etc., are allocated <br /> within the Community Services Department's operating budget, and total approximately <br /> $2,000. <br />
