Vice-Mayor Cook-Kallio read and presented the commendation to the Amador Valley High <br /> School 'We the People' Competition Civics team. <br /> Keldon Clegg, coach, thanked the community for its support. He stated that recent national and <br /> local actions have eliminated funding for the program and issue a call to urgency regarding the <br /> state of civic education in California and throughout the nation. <br /> Vice-Mayor Cook-Kallio stated that while the program was defunded at the national level, <br /> coaches throughout California have banded together and intend to keep going however <br /> possible. <br /> 10. Recognition of out-going Commission and Committee Members <br /> Mayor Hosterman presented the outgoing members of the Youth and Housing Commissions <br /> with a certificate and small gift. <br /> 11. Oath of Office to Committee and Commission Members <br /> The City Clerk administered the oath of office to new members of the Housing, Human <br /> Services, Library, and Youth Commissions. <br /> 12. Public Comment <br /> Carl Pretzel asked the Council to initiate the rezoning procedure for Site 15 in the Housing <br /> Element to correctly reflect the long-standing intent that it be reserved for public and institutional <br /> use. <br /> Kathy Dowding stated that Pleasanton taxpayers have contributed $544 million to the wars in <br /> Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001, $6 million of that within the last month. She read the names of <br /> the 46 American men and women killed there since the last Council meeting. She invited the <br /> public to join Pleasantonians for Peace at its next peaceful protest. <br /> Todd Zaionz said he recently received notice that the tree house in his front yard is in violation <br /> of City code and must be taken down. The stated purpose of the code section cited is to <br /> maintain a neat and tidy community as well as property values. In keeping with the spirit of that <br /> intent, he enlisted the support of neighbors, all of whom are prepared to speak on his behalf. He <br /> asked the Council's assistance in preserving what is a well-built, barely visible, and cherished <br /> neighborhood fixture. The City Manager said staff would be in contact. <br /> Bart Hughes said he was encouraged to learn the details of the new employee agreements. He <br /> thanked the Council and City management for finding to the courage to take this forward and <br /> the workforce and union leaders for the willingness to compromise. <br /> MATTERS INITIATED BY COUNCIL <br /> Councilmember Sullivan requested Council support for Mr. Pretzel's request. He said that this <br /> Council, previous Councils, and the Housing Element Task Force have shown no interest in <br /> residential development at this site.
