She spoke with the City
Manager about this, as the City has been asked to send a letter, which is due Friday, asking
that we retain the current election schedule. They would number it in odd districts so the City
would continue to have representation for those two years.
Mr. Fialho added that this is not unique to the valley. Because of the complexity of the new
maps and numbering, these are some of the holes that must be fixed. They have asked cities to
do to inform the Commission that this is an issue for the region so they can correct it in their
deliberations.
Councilmember Sullivan noted the City could end up having a special election, and he
questioned whether not having a State Senator for two years was unconstitutional. Vice Mayor
Cook-Kallio described those Senate districts impacted and at risk.
Councilmember Thorne questioned if an emergency resolution was needed, and Mr. Fialho said
staff is looking for direction that it adequately communicate to the California Commission that
there is a problem to be addressed.
There was consensus of the Council to direct staff to communicate to the California Commission
that the problem of Pleasanton not having a State Senator for two years should be addressed.
COUNCIL REPORTS - None
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:03 p.m. The Council
extended a tribute to our nation's men and women serving in the military. We wish to honor the
memories of those who have died in past wars in defense of our country, including those who
have died in the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Respectfully submitted,
Karen Diaz
City Clerk
City Council Minutes Page 9 of 9 June 21,2011
