THE CITY OF 7
j'L£ASANTONa CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
June 21, 2011
Community Development
Traffic Engineering Division
TITLE: APPROVE APPLICATION TO LEAGUE OF AMERICAN BICYCLISTS FOR
BICYCLE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY STATUS
SUMMARY
The City of Pleasanton Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan recommends that the City
pursue and achieve Bicycle Friendly Community status, an awards program offered by
the League of American E3icyclists to recognize municipalities that actively support
bicycling. The attached application has been prepared for submittal to the League of
American Bicyclists.
RECOMMENDATION
Approve submittal of the application to the League of American Bicyclists.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
There is no financial impact associated with this report. If Pleasanton achieves award
status, there will be an awards ceremony requiring some use of existing City facilities
and equipment. As part of the application process, the City may receive
recommendations for programs and projects to improve opportunities for bicycling in
Pleasanton. These recommendations would most likely fall within the recommendations
of the existing Pleasanton Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan.
If award status is attained, this may be a factor in attracting future bicycling events to
Pleasanton. Bicycling events may have a positive impact on the local economy, but
such events would require some City resources for event planning, traffic control and
enforcement.
