BACKGROUND
In 2010, the City recognized that the advent of the Firehouse Arts Center would result in
a need to provide concession and catering services for its performances and events.
Recognizing that the "food and beverage" service was not a core service that the City
currently provided; a partnership with an outside vendor would be vital to the overall
success of the Firehouse Arts Center.
As a result, staff developed a Request for Proposal (RFP), seeking an experienced
caterer and/or food and beverage vendor to concession and catering services for the
Firehouse Arts Center. The RFP was distributed to 14 local catering companies and
food and beverage vendors for the provision of: 1) concession services related to
performances at the Firehouse Arts Center; and 2) catering services for artist receptions
at the Harrington Art Gallery.
Three (3) vendors submitted proposals by the deadline of June 18, 2010. Of the three
(3) proposals received, two (2) were complete. These remaining two (2) firms were
invited to participate in several preliminary events prior to the grand opening of the
facility.
After careful review, staff determined that Little Valley Winery was best suited to provide
both concessionaire and catering services for the Firehouse Arts Center. Little Valley
Winery produces and sells its own label of wines and non-alcoholic beverages, and has
an agreement with Bibiane Bakery of Pleasanton to provide light refreshments and
snacks as required. Their staff is competent and personable, and is well equipped to
support the Firehouse Arts Center's brand of quality and sophistication.
Since the grand opening in September 2010, over 18,000 people have visited and/or
participated in a total of 155 events (performances, rehearsals, art exhibits, and
classes) at the Firehouse Arts Center. The Little Valley Winery has played a significant
role of creating the ambiance and contributing to the success of the Firehouse Arts
Center.
Given the very high quality of their work and their familiarity with the Firehouse Arts
Center and its respective programs, staff is recommending that the City Council
approve the service agreement with Little Valley Winery for FY 2011/12.
Submitted by: ,FFi t iscal Review: - Approved by:
/'/
Susan Andrade-Wax Emily Wagner Nelson Fialho
Community Services Director Director of Finance City Manager
Attachment:
1.
