JOINT MEETING
PLEASANTON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
MEMORANDUM
Date: March 28, 2011
To: City Council and PUSD Board of Trustees
1
p`h
From: Nelson Fialho, City Manager
Parvin Ahmadi, Superintendent '
Subject: OVERVIEW OF 2011 YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT DAY
RECOMMENDATION
Youth in Government Day provides a wonderful opportunity for students to learn more
about the City and the School District. The City Council and Board of Trustees will
listen to the feedback from Youth Commission students who helped organize and plan
the day and recognize all students who participated.
SUMMARY
Youth in Government Day was held as a joint venture between the City of Pleasanton
and the Pleasanton Unified School District on Tuesday, March 22, 2011. Seventy
students from Amador Valley, Foothill, Village and Horizon high schools participated.
The student's job shadowed a variety of personnel from both the City and the District.
Students then broke into six groups to discuss and learn the process of how City
Council and School Board meetings are run, how items are put on an agenda and
presented, and how the public can be involved. For the both the City and District
breakout groups, there was a mock City Council /Board group, a public comment group,
and a staff reporting group. The groups were facilitated by Board members, School
Superintendent, Assistant City Manager, Public Information staff, and other City and
District management. The last hour of the day the students presented a mock School
Board meeting and mock City Council meeting.
