Mr. Croeni provided information regarding the requested modification for increased building
,-. height, noting that the lower two-story buildings will be in closer proximity to Sunol Blvd., and
the three-story buildings will be located at the back of the site. He advised that he feels this is an
improvement over the original PUD. He provided a photo depicting the height of the former
Kaiser building and the proposed grading. He noted that the Building A (which is the tallest
building) parapet will be 12 feet lower than the former building. Mr. Croeni explained the
reason for the need of the 2-1/2 foot height increase, commenting that the additional height is
needed to accommodate the duct systems needed for the functions of the Applied Biosystems
business.

In response to an inquiry from Commissioner Roberts, Mr. Croeni advised that the information
he presented did not include the mechanical screening for the existing nor the proposed
buildings.

Mr. Croeni advised that one of the issues from the onset of the project was the balance of making
the buildings fit in and blend, and the prominent position of this site. He noted that there has
been a lot of discussion and interest in the appropriate expression of these buldings as gateway
buildings. He advised that he has been working with Larry Cannon to find ways to alter the
architecture of the south end of Building A and options for introducing Applied Biosystems'
corporate identification on this building. He presented an exhibit showing the AIB logo on
Building A. Discussion ensued regarding options for this elevation. Commissioner Arkin
suggested that the options be presented for the Commission's review.

".......

Stevens Williams ofMBT Architects described the design of the south end of Building A and the
options for the outer layer of the building (metallic screen, relatively clear glass, or glass which
is somewhat tinted.) Mr. Croeni advised that there is an opportunity for public art in this area,
but at this time it is not an integral part of the design.

Commissioner Arkin advised that he likes the current design of the building. Discussion ensued
regarding the possibilities for the design of this elevation.

Mr. Croeni presented the proposed building material options, noting that they would prepare a
larger mock -up to be viewed on the site prior to the final determination.

Mr Sage advised that an external smoking area has not been identified, but that it would not be
near the entry point of the building. Commissioner Arkin stated that he would like to have it
located in a remote covered area.

Mr. Gates presented the stone materials proposed for the rock wall and other design features.

Mr. Sage commented that the analysis of the treatment of the south-facing elevation of Building
A is related to discussion with Mr. Cannon and his comments that perhaps some variation could
be considered for this building. Mr. Sage advised that they are happy to work with staff and the
peer review architect to arrive at a mutually satisfying solution. He noted that they felt the
original design was adequate for the presentation, but they would like to explore some of the
other ideas, while still moving forward with the project. He further noted that they would also

PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES

October 24,2001
Page 4
