BACKGROUND The goal of the Bernal Community Park Master Plan was to create groupings of sport fields and related facilities within a forested framework of open space on approximately 50 acres of parkland. Park facilities are to be interconnected with one another and the outlying Bernal Property "Grand Meadow" through a coordinated system of mounded landforms, plant communities, trails and public art. A multi -use program of active sports facilities and activities is to remain flexible in order to respond to the changing community recreational needs over time. Bernal Community Park (T) is located at 7001 Pleasanton Avenue and upon completion will be approximately 50 acres in overall size. The site terrain is mainly flat with the exception of a north /south drainage canal which is situated in the easternmost portion of the Bernal Property; south of Bernal Avenue, northeast of Valley Avenue, and west of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. The park will be constructed in four (4) phases, of which the first phase was recently completed. At the completion of phase four (4), the park's proposed amenities shall include three (3) lighted baseball fields, three (3) lighted multi - purpose fields, a community center, a play apparatus area, a concession building, restroom facilities, group picnic area, amphitheater, park maintenance building, trails, parking areas and other active space uses. Although the 2006 Master Plan refers to the community park site as the "Bernal Community Park"; the name for the park has not been formally adopted. At its November 12, 2009 meeting, the Parks and Recreation Commission requested that a Public Hearing be conducted to select and recommend to the City Council a permanent name for the community park located at 7001 Pleasanton Avenue. On January 14, 2010, the Parks and Recreation Commission held a Public Hearing to consider the permanent name for Bernal Community Park (T). Notices regarding the Public Hearing were mailed to residents within 1,000 feet of the community park, and to interested parties on the Bernal Property mailing list. In an effort to assist with the park naming process, staff developed several potential names for the Commission's consideration: • Bernal Community Park • Central Park • Ridge View Community Park • Pleasanton Community Park • Ohlone Community Park • Valley Community Park • Branta Community Park • Hayfield Community Park • Red Oat Community Park • Harvest Community Park Page 2 of 3
