CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PLEASANTON <br />ALAMEDA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA <br />RESOLUTION NO. 03-014 <br /> <br />RESOLUTION URGING THE ADOPTION AND PASSAGE <br />OF THE CALIFORNIA WILD HERITAGE ACT OF 2002 <br /> <br />WHEREAS, on May 21, 2002, U. S. Senator Barbara Boxer introduced Senate Bill 2535, the <br /> California Wild Heritage Act of 2002; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Act would designate more than 2.4 million acres in 75 areas in California as <br /> new Wildemess areas, and 22 rivers in California as Wild and Scenic rivers; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Act would preserve natural landscapes, sites associated with ancient Indian <br /> cultures and the settlement of California; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />the Act would protect ecosystems, plants, animals, geologic slxuctures, hydrologic <br />features, historical and cultural archaeological sites, sites used by Indian tribes for <br />spiritual, cultural or subsistence practices, and watersheds; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />the Act would provide opportunities for compatible outdoor recreation, such as <br />horseback riding, hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, white water rat~ing, and trail <br />running; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Act would retain and enhance opportunities for scientific research; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Act would promote the recovery of threatened and endangered species, <br /> including salmon and steelhead; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />the legislation is the result of work between Senator Boxer, her staff, elected <br />officials, recreation organizations, ranchers, California Indian tribes, <br />environmentalists, federal, state and local agencies for over two years. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PLEASANTON RESOLVES <br />AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />Section 1: <br /> <br />The City Council urges the U. S. Congress and President Bush to approve Senate <br />Bill 2535, the California Wild Heritage Act of 2002. <br /> <br /> <br />
