CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PLEASANTON ALAMEDA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA RESOLUTION NO. 03-014 RESOLUTION URGING THE ADOPTION AND PASSAGE OF THE CALIFORNIA WILD HERITAGE ACT OF 2002 WHEREAS, on May 21, 2002, U. S. Senator Barbara Boxer introduced Senate Bill 2535, the California Wild Heritage Act of 2002; and WHEREAS, the Act would designate more than 2.4 million acres in 75 areas in California as new Wildemess areas, and 22 rivers in California as Wild and Scenic rivers; and WHEREAS, the Act would preserve natural landscapes, sites associated with ancient Indian cultures and the settlement of California; and WHEREAS, the Act would protect ecosystems, plants, animals, geologic slxuctures, hydrologic features, historical and cultural archaeological sites, sites used by Indian tribes for spiritual, cultural or subsistence practices, and watersheds; and WHEREAS, the Act would provide opportunities for compatible outdoor recreation, such as horseback riding, hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, white water rat~ing, and trail running; and WHEREAS, the Act would retain and enhance opportunities for scientific research; and WHEREAS, the Act would promote the recovery of threatened and endangered species, including salmon and steelhead; and WHEREAS, the legislation is the result of work between Senator Boxer, her staff, elected officials, recreation organizations, ranchers, California Indian tribes, environmentalists, federal, state and local agencies for over two years. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PLEASANTON RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS: Section 1: The City Council urges the U. S. Congress and President Bush to approve Senate Bill 2535, the California Wild Heritage Act of 2002.
