THE CITY OF
III III a I
pLEASANTONO
CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
14
September21, 2010
Parks and Community Services
TITLE: RECOMMENDATION TO TEMPORARILY SUSPEND HOLIDAY ICE
RINK OPERATIONS IN FY 2010/11
SUMMARY
In early 2009, the San Jose Arena Management (SJAM) proposed to operate an
outdoor ice rink during the holiday season for a period of five years beginning in
November 2009. Recognizing that an outdoor holiday ice rink is a recreational amenity
that would attract both residents and visitors to the downtown area, the City partnered
with SJAM by providing a portion of the Pleasanton Library parking lot and the
necessary infrastructure for SJAM to operate the ice rink. This report summarizes the
key elements of the project and a program evaluation and recommends that the
program be temporarily suspended for at least the 2010 holiday season.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council temporarily suspend holiday ice rink operations
beginning FY 2010/11 and thereafter, until a desirable site can be mutually agreed upon
by the City and SJAM; and additional funding sources and /or corporate sponsorships
can be secured.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
There is no financial impact as a result of staff's recommendation to temporarily
suspend the Holiday Ice program. Reestablishing the program at a future date may
result in City expenditures.
