Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council:
BACKGROUND
The Pleasanton Cultural Arts Foundation has initiated an ambitious fundraising campaign to
support the construction of the Firehouse Arts Center. Members of the Foundation have
developed a proposed Firehouse Arts Center Naming Opportunities and Donor Recognition
Plan, which is designed to facilitate the solicitation of donations and provide a clear and
consistent method for recognition of donors. The proposed Plan is included as Attachment 1 for
the Council's review.
The Plan identifies possible categories of naming opportunities and corresponding methods of
donor recognition. At this point, specific dollar amounts have not been assigned to the various
donation levels. This flexibility will allow the Foundation to identify the appropriate monetary
levels for each naming category as negotiations with prospective major donors take place, and a
realistic sense of the "market" develops. The Foundation plans to return to the Council with
specific recommendations for the monetary levels it proposes to assign to each gift level when
sufficient information has been achieved through the solicitation/negotiation process.
The Council is also being asked to designate Firehouse Arts Center as the name for the facility,
and that no other name be attached to the overall building.
The Civic Arts Commission reviewed and unanimously approved the proposed Plan at its
meeting on June 5, 2006. Minutes from that meeting are included as Attachment 2.
The Parks and Recreation Commission reviewed and approved the Plan at its meeting on June 8,
2006. Commissioners recommended that the supporting Plan be simplified to avoid too many
plaques throughout the building, and that all recognition devices, i.e., plaques, writings, etc., be
done in a balanced, artful, and tasteful way. Commissioners also requested that the Parks and
Recreation Commission be consulted when any kind of plaque or recognition device is proposed
for the exterior and/or planted areas around the building. Chairperson Jerry Pentin offered to
serve as liaison to the process, as he has served as a member of the Firehouse Arts Center Task
Force. The Plan being presented this evening reflects the recommendations of the Parks and
Recreation Commission. Attachment 3 represents the Commission's approved minutes
concerning this matter.
FISCAL IMPACT
Approval of the Plan could result in contributions to offset construction costs for the Firehouse
Arts Center. Actual donations will be better defined when the Pleasanton Cultural Arts
Foundation returns to the Council with recommended contribution levels for naming rights later
this year.
SR 06:183
Page 2
