Attachment 2
•
7. MATTERS BEFORE THE COMMISSION
A. Discussion of Naming Rights for the Firehouse Arts Center
Mr. Jorgensen advised the Commission that the Pleasanton Cultural Arts Foundation (PCAF) has initiated
an ambitious fundraising campaign to support construction of the Firehouse Arts Center. PCAF has
developed a proposed Firehouse Naming Opportunities and Donor Recognition Policy, designed to
facilitate the solicitation of donations and provide a clear and consistent method for the recognition of
donors.
Copies of the Policy and corresponding plan were provided to the Commission for review. Mr. Jorgensen
introduced Greg Resnick, Chairperson of PCAF, who discussed the proposed plan and Policy and asked
Commissioners to provide comments /recommendations for identifying possible categories of naming
opportunities and donor recognition. He advised that major naming opportunities for the facility would
include: the studio theater, art galleries, grand lobby, and classrooms. Other naming opportunities would
include: wall sponsors (quotes), theater seats, the box office, lighting systems, dressing rooms, benches,
drinking foundations, etc.
Mr. Resnick informed the Commission that specific dollar amounts had not yet been determined for the
various donation levels. The Foundation intends to return to the Commission and City Council with
specific monetary gift level recommendations after additional information has been received through the
solicitation and negotiation process.
The Commission was also advised by Mr. Resnick that the Foundation is recommending that the facility
name be fixed as Firehouse Arts Center, so that the City Council can include this as part of the overall
Policy.
Commissioner Molz had questions concerning sponsorships for wall quotes and rotating art, wondering
how that would be handled when quotes and art work changed.
Chairperson Nelson polled the Commission regarding naming the facility Firehouse Art Center or
Firehouse Arts Center. All Commissioners were in agreement for naming the facility the Firehouse Arts
Center.
The Commission was then asked by Chairperson Nelson to determine whether they could accept the
Firehouse Naming Opportunities and Donor Recognition Policy as presented, with the understanding that
the Foundation would return to the Commission at a later date with specific recommendations for
monetary gift levels. Commissioners agreed with that recommendation.
A motion was made by Commissioner Molz, seconded by Commissioner McLane, recommending that the
City Council:
1. Formerly name the facility the Firehouse Arts Center;
2. Approve the Naming Opportunities and Donor Recognition Policy as proposed by the Pleasanton
Cultural Arts Foundation; and
Civic Arts Commission Minutes
June 5, 2006
Page 2
