BACKGROUND
The advent of the Firehouse Arts Center will result in a very large increase in the
number of presenting /producing /training programs that will exceed the capacity of the
existing Civic Arts staff to accommodate. Collaboration with a theatrical production
organization /company that offers an extensive and proven track record in the production
of theatre performance and education for young people and family audiences will be
vital to the overall success of the Civic Arts Division and its expanding programs.
Civic Arts staff developed a Request for Proposal (RFP), seeking an experienced
professional theatrical production organization /company to work with he Civic Arts
Division staff to provide a series of high quality theatre programs for the community (see
Attachment 1):
1. A summertime outdoor theater production;
2. A series of three (3) youth and family- oriented theatre productions; and
3. A comprehensive theatre education program.
The RFP was sent to ten (10) professional Bay Area theater companies, all known for
their professionalism, quality of work and youth programming or potential for youth
programming. These included: California Shakespeare Theater; Shakespeare
Associates; California Theater Center; Berkeley Repertory Theater; Woman's Will; San
Francisco Shakespeare Festival; TheatreWorks; San Jose Repertory Theater, San Jose
stage Company; and Pacific Coast Repertory Theatre.
One (1) company, San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, submitted a proposal by the
April 15, 2010 deadline.
San Francisco Shakespeare Festival was invited to present its proposal to the Civic Arts
Commission at the Commission's June 7, 2010 meeting. The Commission voted to
approve the selection of San Francisco Shakespeare Festival to provide the services
described in the RFP. It also voted to recommend that the Council approve the
attached contract with San Francisco Shakespeare Festival for theatrical production
services. Theater education classes will be provided by San Francisco Shakespeare
Festival and will be processed through the Department of Parks and Community
Services' fee -class contracting process.
Submitted by: Fiscal Review: Approve y:
Q0- ; 0 yu
Susan Andrade -Wax Emily Wagner Nelson Fialho
Parks and Community Finance Director City Manager
Services Director
Attachment
1.
