James Kohnen said he is a hopeful resident of Stoneridge Creek. He outlined his involvement in
local government, acknowledged the difficult and frustrating task before the Council, and said it
is deeply disappointing to see that the approval process will not move forward tonight. He
witnessed the concept of high - quality retirement living that the Stoneridge Creek development
team has offered to Pleasanton and is confident of its viability. He said these dynamic
communities are full of people living the retirement dream that they deserve and the type that
wishes for his wife and himself.
Barbara Hempill said that as a member of the Pleasanton Assisted Living Subcommittee she
visited existing facilities throughout the Bay Area, several of which were part of a continuing
care community. She said these residents were living longer, healthier, and happier lives; an
opportunity that she and her husband saw in Stoneridge Creek. Time is of the essence in order
to maintain the self- sufficiency required to become a resident. She urged the Council to approve
Stoneridge Creek as soon as possible so that annexation of the Staples Ranch property to the
City of Pleasanton can be expedited.
Sarah Albert said she is 81, has been accepted as and is ready to become a resident of the
Stoneridge Creek continuing care community. She said she grew up in the membership of the
greatest generation and is a true believer that responsibility and doing the right thing were, and
still are, of prime importance. She urged the Council to continue to follow along with these
values, take responsibility, and do what is so right for Pleasanton by approving the project
immediately.
Yuan Albert said Pleasanton is recognized as one of the best planned and admissive
communities in northern California. This project is like adding the final touch to a fine painting
and offers the City a service its residents desperately need. He said he suffers from Parkinson's
disease and while he is self- sufficient today, there is some urgency in identifying an assisted
living facility for his future. He said the project is a clear asset to the City, providing additional
employment and tax revenue.
John Carroll said he too is disappointed by the additional delay but conceded it is probably
outside of the Council's control. He said the bulk of the delay is due to the extension of
Stoneridge Drive. He questioned the need to extend Stoneridge Drive now that Livermore has
pulled its end of the project and there will be no continuation of Jack London.
PUBLIC HEARINGS AND OTHER MATTERS
11. Mayor Hosterman said there
are many cities in the State of California who are not faring as well as Pleasanton, and she
credited him with much of that. She said the City of San Mateo's gain is Pleasanton's loss and
he would be missed.
City Council Minutes Page 5 of 11 June 15, 2010
