SPECIAL MEETING MINUTES 1 <br /> PLEASANTON CITY COUNCIL AND <br /> PLEASANTON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT <br /> BOARD OF TRUSTEES <br /> MARCH 22, 2010 <br /> CALL TO ORDER <br /> The meeting was called to order by Mayor Jennifer Hosterman and Board President Chris Grant at <br /> 7:03 p.m. <br /> Amador Valley H.S. student Alex Nottingham led the Pledge of Allegiance. <br /> ROLL CALL <br /> Present were Mayor Jennifer Hosterman; Vice Mayor Jerry Thorne; Councilmembers Cheryl Cook <br /> Kallio and Matt Sullivan; Board President Chris Grant; Clerk Pat Kernan; Board Members Valerie <br /> Arkin, Jamie Hintzke and Jim Ott. Councilmember Cindy McGovern was absent. <br /> President Grant welcomed Mayor, Vice Mayor and City Council members. Mayor Hosterman thanked <br /> the Board for the opportunity to meet once again and reviewed the points of order. <br /> PUBLIC COMMENT: <br /> Karen DeBaca Martens thanked both the City Council and the Board Members for their collaboration <br /> efforts. She spoke regarding Measure G, support of the teachers in the District, and she addressed <br /> some concerns regarding the Oak Grove development. <br /> REPORT ON 2010 YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT DAY: <br /> Julie Duncan, PUSD Coordinator of Career and Technical Education, gave an overview of the Youth <br /> in Government (YIG) Day which was held as a joint venture between the City of Pleasanton and the <br /> Pleasanton Unified School District (PUSD) on Tuesday, March 9, 2010. She mentioned that the <br /> support from the City and the District was amazing. Eighty students from Amador Valley, Foothill, <br /> Village and Horizon High Schools participated. The students' job shadowed a variety of personnel <br /> from both the City and the District. Students then broke into eight groups to discuss and provide input <br /> on achieving life balance in their lives. Becky Hopkins, Recreation Supervisor from the City, agreed <br /> that the day was extremely valuable and successful, noting that the topic of discussion was life <br /> balance. The groups focused on four key areas that influence life balance; friends, family, school and <br /> extra curricular activities. <br /> Amador Valley H.S. student Leicester Dissels shadowed Mark Duncanson from the City Recreation <br /> Department and shared comments regarding his day. He stated this was an awesome experience <br /> and was involved in a discussion group regarding friends, peer pressure, how to cope, and friends <br /> helping friends. Affordable activities for students, the difficulty meeting people in the freshman year <br /> and the fundraiser for an improv festival in Chicago was discussed. <br /> Foothill H.S. student Peter Wrenn shadowed Jon Morgan, Data Processing Coordinator, PUSD. He <br /> stated he heard all about Zangle, including attendance records, report cards, state reports, etc. He <br /> stated the life balance concern he had was family. He suggested the "Day in the Life" video for <br /> parents to view day -to -day activities. Parents need to be more aware of the social and mental health <br /> of their children, pressures of grades, extracurricular activities, sports, family and friends, etc. A <br /> parent information night at school was suggested to show what kids face and provide a glimpse of <br /> their activities. Family fun nights were also considered. President Grant questioned the feasibility of <br />
