NATURAL GAS <br />A dr3', combustible mix of methane and hydrocarbons used in heating, lighting, and other <br />utility services. <br /> <br />PHOTOVOLTAIC (PV) <br />Pertaining to the production of electricity from light. <br /> <br />RATE <br />The unit charge or charges made to customers for providing a utility service. <br /> <br />REGULATION <br />A rule or law established by the government that sets procedures that a utility must <br />follow. In electricity, regulation has been used to set rates, determine where and when <br />power facilities are built, set which utility companies serve a given area, and other <br />functions. <br /> <br />RELIABILITY <br />The provision of adequate and dependable generation, transmission, and distribution <br />service. Reliable means knowing that there will always be power (when you flip on the <br />switch).2 <br /> <br />RENEWABLES <br />Renewables are sustainable energy sources that cause relatively few environmental <br />impacts and pose a low risk to human health. Renewables are sources that constantly <br />renew themselves or that are regarded as practically inexhaustible. Renewables include, <br />but are not limited to, technologies such as photovoltaic and wind power. <br /> <br />SOLAR ENERGY <br />Power produced by technology that collects heat and/or light 'radiated from the sun. Two <br />common forms of solar energy are photovoltaic panels, which are semiconductors that <br />directly generate electricity, and solar thermal plants, which use the sun to create steam to <br />turn a turbine. <br /> <br />SUPPLY <br />The mount of a commodity available for meeting a demand or for purchase at a given <br />price. <br /> <br />SUSTAINABLE <br />Sustainable means meeting the needs of the current generation without compromising the <br />ability of future generations to meet their own needs.3 <br /> <br />Glossary of Terms <br /> Page 3 <br /> <br /> <br />
