Councilmember Sullivan referred to the request for tennis courts, said there have been many
meetings and options for tennis, did not want to advocate building two more tennis courts or fund
projects now, but he wanted to determine if there is a way to revisit the programming of the existing
tennis park and look at the balance of program time versus free time.
Mr. Fialho agreed that balancing availability is what has been heard from tennis participants
especially during prime time during the week in the evenings. He asked to allow staff to work
through the matter and provide an update informally or at a Council meeting, as he believed
programming issues could be solved.
Councilmember Thorne suggested the Parks and Recreation Commission's work through the
process and monitor the issue with staff support.
Councilmember Sullivan said his understanding is that if the Bernal Phase II design could be
brought forward and there is support from the Parks and Recreation Commission and Council to
modify the design to include tennis courts. He felt this would also fall within the specific plan. Mr.
Fialho agreed and said the Commission has heard the Council collectively in what they want to
achieve with the Bernal property. There has been emphasis placed on open space and trails and
they have acted on a concept plan that includes sports fields and open space, but not tennis courts.
However, the Council can weigh in on this and hear from the community.
COUNCIL REPORTS: None
ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:36 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Karen Diaz
City Clerk
City Council Minutes Page 13 of 13 June 16, 2009
