DRAFT HASTER PLAN FOR THE DPTS

FIRE STATION No. I
EXISTING CONDITIONS

Fire Station No. 1 is located at 4444 Railroad
Ave., between Neal and Spring Streets, next to the
Regional Trail Corridor (the old Southern Pacific
Railroad Corridor). Parking areas now surround the
building on three sides.

The station was otiginally constructed in the
1920's. It was greatly enlarged in 1968-69 accord-
ing to the design of Neil Smith and Associates of San
Francisco. In 1992 it was seismically strengthened
following the Loma Prieta earthquake.

The present building forms a triangular plan
bounded by Railroad Avenue to the west, the
Regional Trail Corridor to the east, and a residential
neighborhood to the north. The historic fire house
of the 1920's fills the triangle's acute apex and is ori-
ented towards Neal street to the southwest. The
1960's addition fills the rest of the triangle, and has
a public entry and apparatus bay doors facing Onto
the street. A secondary set of apparatus bay doors
opens onto a driveway adjacent to the Regional Trail
Corridor.

The historic building and the elevations of the
addition are primarily of red brick.. Together, they
make a composition of different building forms of
varying heighrs and shapes. The larger addition
dominates the historic building by covering up the
lower level of three of the four sides of the original
building. The historic building has a small corner
tower that has been converted to a stairway. The
design of the 1960's addition proposed a 35 ft.
tower, that, if it had been built, might have
improved the building's overall composition.

Abovt:
Fire Station
No. I
(from
Railroad Avt.).
Etlow:
Historic
portion of
Fire Station
No. I
(from tht south).

FIRE STATION No. I DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS
27

III1 II
