DIlAFT MA5TEII. PLAN FOil THE DPTS

During World War II, rhe town grew. as military
personnel moved to the Camp Parks area in Dublin.
Starting in 1950, research laboratories in Livermore,
and other employment centers in the Tri- Valley area.
created a new need for housing, and the town's pop-
ulation increased. The 1950's to 1980's were the
time of the City's most rapid growth. and included
the construction of Stoneridge Mall. the beginning
of Hacienda Business Park, the widening of many
streets, and the addition of new neighborhoods out-
side the city's old downtown.

In 1995, Pleasanton had a population of over
57.000. Since 1940, Pleasanton has become a shop-
ping and employment center for the region. Despite
this, the downtown area appears relatively
unchanged. Its character remains that of a Main
Street in a small California town, with pedestrian
activity and a notably small automobile presence.

DOWNTOWN TODAY

Downtown is described in the City's General
Plan as the "heart of Pleasanton." Its distinctive
character is a combination of old buildings, tree-
lined residential neighborhoods, and a recognizable
Main St. It is the location of community meeting
places (City offices and the library). and of greenery
(parks and the Arroyo del Valle).

The Downtown area is a place where commer-
cial, civic, residential, and recreational interests and
land uses meet. As a thriving business district. access
and parking are at least as important as the district's
physical character. As a place for community gath-
ering, there is a need for places that can support such
events as the Farmers Market and summertime
communIty concerts.

The demands placed on parks and recreation
facilities by a growing city can be significant. Those
that are located in the center of town are important
not only to their own neighborhoods. but also to the
city as a whole, because they are downtown.

BACKGROUND
9

II ill II I

Above
Pkasanton s
Farm~rs' Mark~t.
Mid4/"
Th, Community
Band
&low:
Vt't~ranj Plaza.

- >...~;;..~'>:',r'?)'
;~.}.:;,~~./~.~.
.;....'\~.J;:;:..5.i;f
.
