11 <br /> THE CITY OF <br /> t mom CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT <br /> pLEASANTONe <br /> June 16, 2009 <br /> Parks and Community Services <br /> TITLE: APPOINTMENT OF DEBORAH GROSSMAN AS CITY POET <br /> LAUREATE FOR 2009 2011 <br /> SUMMARY <br /> The primary role of the Poet Laureate is to provide appropriate poetry at civic events, <br /> and promote the appreciation of the literary arts in the community for a two -year period. <br /> The current Poet Laureate Martha Meltzer has focused on poetry for youth, established <br /> the Teen Poet Laureate Program, and expanded public readings. With the current Poet <br /> Laureate's term coming to an end, the Civic Arts Commission established a Poet <br /> Laureate Selection Committee to review submitted materials, interview candidates, and <br /> make a recommendation of a new Poet Laureate to the City Council for next two -year <br /> term. The Committee is recommending that Deborah Grossman be appointed the City's <br /> Poet Laureate for the 2009 2011 term. <br /> POET LAUREATE SELECTION COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION <br /> That the City Council appoint Deborah Grossman as the City Poet Laureate for 2009 <br /> 2011 term. <br /> RECOMMENDATION <br /> Staff concurs with the recommendation of the Poet Laureate Selection Committee. <br /> FINANCIAL STATEMENT <br /> The City Poet Laureate receives no remuneration. Any expenses related to the Poet <br /> Laureate program, i.e. supplies for workshops, poetry readings, etc., are allocated <br /> within the Parks and Community Services Department's operating budget, and total <br /> approximately $2,000. <br />
