1 <br /> MINUTES <br /> JOINT PLEASANTON CITY COUNCIL AND PLEASANTON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT <br /> BOARD OF TRUSTEES <br /> March 23, 2009 <br /> 1. CALL TO ORDER <br /> The meeting was called to order by Mayor Jennifer Hosterman and Board President Chris <br /> Grant at 7:03 p.m. Amador student, Arianna Medel, led the pledge of allegiance. <br /> 2. ROLL CALL <br /> Present: Council Members Cook- Kallio, McGovern, Sullivan, Thorne, Mayor Hosterman <br /> Board Members Arkin, Hintzke, Kernan, Ott, President Grant <br /> Absent: None <br /> 3. PUBLIC COMMENT <br /> Jeff Bowser said he is hoping for support on Measure G. It is a $233 per parcel tax with a <br /> senior exemption and an exemption for those who are disabled. He stated that they held a <br /> very successful rally. <br /> 4. RECOGNITION OF YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT DAY STUDENTS and RECAP OF <br /> STUDENT RECOMMENDATIONS <br /> Julie Duncan, PUSD Coordinator of Career and Technical Education, and Hiram Berhel, <br /> City of Pleasanton Supervisor, Teen and Youth Services, gave an overview of Youth in <br /> Government Day that was held on March 10. This is a joint venture between the district <br /> and the city. This year they talked about the Youth Master Plan and 61 students <br /> participated in the day. The students took the day seriously and it was a huge success. <br /> Students were matched with a job shadow, were served lunch by Village students, and <br /> listened to a talk from Mayor Hosterman and President Grant. Maria Lara provided <br /> information on the Youth Master Plan Implementation Committee. In the afternoon the <br /> students broke out in discussion groups where the students had a topic and they could <br /> share their opinions. <br /> Amador student Stefan Hall shared comments from the topics of childcare and supervised <br /> youth activities. He said they want the city to provide more out of town youth experiences; <br /> there are many opportunities available through churches but not available to other youth. <br /> Some other items they discussed were developing a teen club, having youth concerts, <br /> holding evening pool activities, walk in clinics, and more accessibility of basketball courts. <br /> They'd like to see motivational speakers and downtown activities to promote programs and <br /> they'd like to see a database listing all opportunities for volunteer hours. <br /> Foothill student Alyssa Goard also shared comments from the discussion group. She said <br /> the bridge between the City and students is extremely important. She noted that students <br /> are interested in communication services and that they would read specific youth columns <br /> in the Weekly and Independent newspapers. They would like to see a teen section in the <br /> Pleasanton Activities guide and they would like to see more emphasis on technology, <br /> including Facebook interaction and YouTube videos, but not text messages. She said <br /> Ptown411 is a great resource but a lot of kids don't know about it. The students expressed <br /> that they are interested in obtaining jobs, attending job fairs, and knowing about volunteer <br />
