CITY OF PLEASANTON
COUNTY 'OF ALAMEDA
STATE OF CALIFORNIA
No.

WliEP.~ S,
WlIERF~S ,

VSiEREkS,

39.45 acres of land located at Bernal and Foothill Road was
zoned by the Plemsanton City Council in 1963, no members of
which are on the present City Council, following proper public
hearings and lawful procedure, and

a building permit had been granted subject to that zoning to
develop the 21 acres zoned RM-2500, and

said development called the attention of the Planning Commis-
sion and City Council to the existing zoning of the area, and

it appeared that the existing zoning might not be compatible
with current patterns of land use, and

the City Council felt that the zoning for the area should be
reviewed and perhaps changed to reflect refined development
policies, and

the City Council did initiate a study by the Planning staff
of the whole area which resulted in recommendations for
change in the 18-1/2 acres still zoned, which recommendations
were acted on by the Planning Commission and by the City
Council and were approved by the Planning Commission and
partially approved by the City Council, and

the editor of the "Independent" had full access to and full
knowledge of these facts, and

the "Independent" published an editorial on February 28, 1971,
entitled "Pleasanton's Brutality*' and wilfully omitted the
facts that:

1. The land was already zoned.
2. A building permit had been issued under that zoning

3. The Council itself initiated an action to study the
remaining zoned land with the idea of changing the
zoning if necessary, compatible with current policy,

and

the "lndependant" maliciously distorted the intent of the
Planning Commission and the City Council by using phrases
such as "developer oriented" and "grossly ravenous" city
government.

THEP.~OR~, BE IT RESOLVED
The Pleasanton City Council hereby condemns the studied Journalistic
practice of *'The Independent" in withholding pertinent information
in distorting and twisting facts and in the use of untrue, inflam-
matory and derisive language to try to intimidate City officis\als; and

The Pleasanton City Council hereby condemns all "yellow Journalism'
as a disservice and an affront to the community and as a deliberate
attempt to polarize its citizens and calls upon "The Independent"
to review its policies.
