TO:

FROM:

SUBJECT:

MEMORANDUM

January 23, 1975

City Manager
cc: Director of Housing and Community Development

Director of Engineering Services

Heritage Tree Removal 348 St. Marys Street

A request to remove a Heritage Tree, 30 inch diameter and approxi-
mately 25 ft. high Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), has been
received from Mr. J. Jack Bras on behalf of his client, Mr. Bindi.
The tree is located at 348 St. Marys Street.

In accordance with established procedure, a public hearing has been
advertised for the January 27, 1975, City Council meeting at which
time the Council will consider the request to remove this tree.

Mr. Bindi desires to construct a 4426 sguare feet restaurant building.
The location of the tree is incompatible with the proposed develop-
ment of the property which staff feels is a reasonable mroposal.

An on-site investigation revealed that this tree has a large potted-
out cavity at its base and has been severely topped several years
past.

In view of the condition of the tree, the staff feels it would be
unreasonable to require the owner to redesign the Droposed building
to preserve this tree. It is our opinion that the tree will require
removal within a few years because of its present condition, there-
fore, it is recommended that the City Council arant Dermission to
remove this Heritage Tree.
