CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PLEASANTON <br /> <br /> ALAMEDA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA <br /> <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 81~15 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION ENDORSING AND SUPPORTING THE OBJECTIVES AND <br />GOALS OF THE CALIFORNIA RESOURCE RALLY <br /> <br />more than forty-six million tons of non-hazardous solid waste are generated <br />each year in California while many of the State's six hundred sanitary land <br />fills are closing for want of space or failure to meet health and safety <br />standards; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />Californians spend more than six hundred million dollars each year to col- <br />lect, transfer, haul, and bury solid waste that contains hundreds of millions <br />of dollars of valuable energy and materials that could easily be reused, re- <br />cycles, or otherwise recovered; and <br /> <br />the problem of litter continues to plague California cities and counties <br />costing the taxpayers an additional one hundred million dollars a year to <br />handle; and <br /> <br />the State Solid Waste Management Board is the agency responsible for initiat- <br />ing and encouraging statewide and community programs in solid waste manage- <br />ment planning and enforcement, recycling, resourcereuse, energy recovery, <br />litter control, and public education and participation; and <br /> <br />the State Solid Waste Management Board -- with the support of dozens of <br />California public interest groups, businesses, and local governments -- <br />is sponsoring the GREAT CALIFORNIA RESOURCE RALLY to be held April 20-26, <br />1981, to raise California's awareness of the State's impending garbage <br />crisis and encourage citizens participation in litter control, recycling <br />and waste reduction activities; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Pleasanton has a critical leadership role to play in helping <br /> to find solutions to California's solid waste management challanges. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PLEASANTON RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />Section 1. That the City of Pleasanton hereby endorses and supports the objectives <br /> and goals of the California Resource Rally, urges its citizens and City <br /> personnel and agencies to participate in and support recycling, litter <br /> control, and waste reduction activities throughout the year but especially <br /> during RALLY WEEK OF APRIL 20-26, 1981. <br /> <br />Section 2. That the City of Pleasanton, by adoption of this resolution, urges its <br /> government personnel to seek all available funding from the State Solid <br /> Waste Management Board under the Board's various grant programs for <br /> initiation or reinforcement of recycling, litter control, waste reduc- <br /> tion and resource recovery activities, and further urges its personnel <br /> to maximize the reuse and recovery of the City of Pleasanton's waste <br /> resources, especially paper, motor oil, aluminum, glass, and newsprint. <br /> <br /> <br />
