CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PLEASANTON ALAMEDA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA RESOLUTION NO. 81~15 A RESOLUTION ENDORSING AND SUPPORTING THE OBJECTIVES AND GOALS OF THE CALIFORNIA RESOURCE RALLY more than forty-six million tons of non-hazardous solid waste are generated each year in California while many of the State's six hundred sanitary land fills are closing for want of space or failure to meet health and safety standards; and WHEREAS, Californians spend more than six hundred million dollars each year to col- lect, transfer, haul, and bury solid waste that contains hundreds of millions of dollars of valuable energy and materials that could easily be reused, re- cycles, or otherwise recovered; and the problem of litter continues to plague California cities and counties costing the taxpayers an additional one hundred million dollars a year to handle; and the State Solid Waste Management Board is the agency responsible for initiat- ing and encouraging statewide and community programs in solid waste manage- ment planning and enforcement, recycling, resourcereuse, energy recovery, litter control, and public education and participation; and the State Solid Waste Management Board -- with the support of dozens of California public interest groups, businesses, and local governments -- is sponsoring the GREAT CALIFORNIA RESOURCE RALLY to be held April 20-26, 1981, to raise California's awareness of the State's impending garbage crisis and encourage citizens participation in litter control, recycling and waste reduction activities; and WHEREAS, the City of Pleasanton has a critical leadership role to play in helping to find solutions to California's solid waste management challanges. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PLEASANTON RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. That the City of Pleasanton hereby endorses and supports the objectives and goals of the California Resource Rally, urges its citizens and City personnel and agencies to participate in and support recycling, litter control, and waste reduction activities throughout the year but especially during RALLY WEEK OF APRIL 20-26, 1981. Section 2. That the City of Pleasanton, by adoption of this resolution, urges its government personnel to seek all available funding from the State Solid Waste Management Board under the Board's various grant programs for initiation or reinforcement of recycling, litter control, waste reduc- tion and resource recovery activities, and further urges its personnel to maximize the reuse and recovery of the City of Pleasanton's waste resources, especially paper, motor oil, aluminum, glass, and newsprint.
